The present book, based on study of earlier inaccessible archives and other documentary sources, sheds light on the history of Ukraine during the dramatic twentieth century. The author, a prominent Ukrainian historian, analyzes historical events on the premise that none of them occurred in isolation and all of them involved the human factor. The book contains articles about many distinguished figures and their tragic fates at the time of communist dictatorship. Using materials of the former Communist Party archives, including those of the Cheka-GPU-NKVD-KGB, the author restores previously unknown facts in the biographies of those figures.
