The book by the prominent French Slavic historian Daniel Beauvoir is devoted to the history of Right-Bank Ukraine — Kyiv, Volhynia, and Podillya — as part of the Russian Empire (1793–1914). The author focuses on the struggle between the Russian autocracy and the Polish elites for dominance in the region, in particular, for control over the Ukrainian peasantry. The author shows the difficulties of entering the former lands of the Commonwealth in the Romanov Empire, explains why the Polish landowning aristocracy, despite the growth of Russian nationalism, remained a privileged and successful group until 1917; highlights the dramatic fate of almost forgotten by historians "intermediate" categories of the population, who did not fit into the rigid hierarchy of n society. Proving the unrealistic nature of all projects of both Polonization and Russification of the majority of the population of the Right Bank, the author presents the formation of the Ukrainian nation as a natural product of the historical conditions prevailing in these areas.
