In this book, the main emphasis is on traditional Estonian signs and symbols, but where necessary, their interpretations are placed in a wider cultural context, because only rarely do the symbols of one culture exist completely separately from the rest of the world. However, on the other hand, each cultural-traditional space of time gives the ideas of the given region its own unique nuances, so Estonian traditional symbols are vivid information carriers precisely against the background of the local religion and culture. The purpose of the book is to introduce the meaning language of traditional Estonian culture and to describe the content and functions related to it. The sample texts were mostly collected 100-150 years ago, but the meaning of the keywords described goes much further back in history. Reet Hiiemae is a folklorist and religious scholar, whose focus is the psychological aspect of beliefs, ways of protection manifested in folklore, and coping with fears and traumas.
