The book describes Leningrad at the end of 1941, the period of cold and hunger. A mysterious emissary writes secret-service letters to Hitler. An ominous “Plan D” is worked out, what supposes detonation of Leningrad in case of its fall. A young colonel of the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs comes from Moscow and falls in love with Varya, who has just graduated from school. Varya, in her turn, waites for her fiance to return from the front, she also helps her mother and friends, and believes in Victory. Will her dreams come true? The novel was published in the author’s edition, preserving his punctuation, orthography and morphology. All the distortions of historical and personal names were made purposefully.
