This is the first study of film from a feminist perspective. Archetypes of Latvian femininity and their film versions are analysed – from the beginnings of Latvian film in the 1920s right up to the present day. Various women's roles are considered: the mother, the femme fatale, the victim etc., examining their presentation on the screen and characterising the social, political and cultural context of gender roles. Particular attention is given to the phenomenon of the female film star, investigating the role of the outstanding actress Vija Artmane within the Soviet cultural system.
