The book “Then, under the plane trees of Tashkent...” by Leila Shakhnazarova is another meeting with her beautiful, “breathing” prose, which until now was familiar to us only from individual publications. And here is a stunning series of colorful portraits, united into a single collection, from revered venerable writers to all-knowing metropolitan taxi drivers - portraits executed in the very difficult genre of sketches and essays. But the author managed to fit a lot into these small forms. For example, the history of the Pushkin Society, created in the difficult 1990s for Russian-speaking intellectuals of Uzbekistan, made us recall the free library-reading room named after Leo Tolstoy that worked in pre-revolutionary Tashkent. And the association turned out to be not accidental: it is with this library and other public organizations similar to it that the book draws analogies, proving that often, very often, in difficult years, the public can do much more than the government.
