Peteris Birkerts (1881–1956) is an outstanding Latvian scientist, founder of sociology and psychology in Latvia, pedagogue, literary scholar and folklore researcher, whose main work is directly related to folklore and whose heritage has not been properly identified and appreciated to this day. During the Soviet era, Birkerts was also a lecturer at the University of Latvia, managing the Folklore Materials Collection and Arrangement Sector at the Folklore Institute.
