"The Treasure of Khan Kubrat". In 1989, the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, the USSR (today's St Petersburg in Russia) staged an exhibition at the National Museum of History in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, entitled: "The Treasure of Khan Kubrat: A Culture of Bulgars, Khazars, and Slavs". The exhibition featured a large part of a set of objects discovered near Malaya Pereshchepina, Ukraine and artifacts of the synchronous cultures of the Bulgars, the Slavs and the Khazars who inhabited the steppes north of the Black Sea between the 6th and the 7th century AD. The site of the discovery was identified as the tomb of Khan Kubrat, who is credited with establishing the confederation of Old Great Bulgaria in ca. 635 AD. The finds were thus linked directly to the dawn of Bulgarian statehood. With the permission of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, experts made silicone impressions from a small portion of the items exhibited in Sofia. The impressions were later used to make replicas of nine objects which are featured in the present catalog. Nowadays, the replicas from this treasure which is so significant for Bulgaria's history are on permanent display at Sofia's National Museum of History.
