The monograph is about developments in Bulgaria inspired by the Russian perestroika (restructuring) in the late 1980s which precipitated the disintegration of the communist bloc. The book draws on a wealth of source material, above all, a mountain of documents from the former Central Archive of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP). It also uses material from the BCP Central Committee departments of Propaganda and Agitation, Arts and Culture, and National and Social Security, but first and foremost, the Information and Sociological Studies Centre with its vast database. Further information was gleaned from parliament records, books and periodicals.
