The Savior Monastery was founded in the XIIIth century and the existing walls and towers date back to the XVIth century. This was an important fortification in which Ivan IV took refuge during the years of the Tatar yoke. Its history is also connected with the Romanovs dynnasty and Patriarch Nikon. The Transfiguration Cathedral is a masterpiece of Russian architecture. It dates back to 1516, but the frescos date back to 1782. The book contains information about this one of the oldest monuments of Russian culture. It includes information on architecture of the cathedral, characteristics of its wall paintings, icons and iconostasis, and also a complete history of its restoration.
