The present monograph represents a series of essays, which contain the results of the authors’ longstanding work at the study of the river routes of Eastern Europe on the basis of Ancient, Arabic-Persian and Scandinavian narrative sources, as well as the tradition of depicting East European rivers in ancient and medieval cartography. The book contains researches of the ideas of ancient and medieval authors about East European hydrography. The role of the region’s river routes in the system of international communications in different historical periods is extended. The first chapter by L.V.Polosnnov is dedicated to the rivers of the Northern Black Sea Region in ancient and West European medieval geocartography. The second chapter by T.M.Kalinina and I.G.Konnovalova comprises researches of the East European rivers according to the Arabic and Persian geographic literature. The third chapter by T.N.Jackson includes the analysis of East European hydrography in the context of ancient Scandinavian sources.
