The book by Igor and Natalia Narsky consists of fifteen essays: in each of them, the authors analyze a specific plot related to the cultural history of the main Russian tree — from ancient peasant songs and the poetization of birch in the 19th century to a dance ensemble and currency shops in the USSR. Referring to scientific, popular science, journalistic, folklore and poetic texts, published and unpublished documents, songs, paintings and films in their work, the researchers put forward a bold hypothesis: the consistent "nationalization" of birch began quite recently — only in the second half of the 20th century.
