During presidential elections in summer of 1996, the communists, in fact, had the last opportunity to get back the power over Russia. It seemed like by that time Russia had steadily settled down to a democratic course. Still, as the elections approached, it was clear that the situation was not like that. The matter was that popularity of Boris Yeltsyn, the country’s President, was falling into disfavor day by day, and finally it was obvious that his reelection for the second term was hardly possible. And at the same time, Gennady Zuganov’s – his main rival’s – chances to win the elections were pretty good. The present book describes the way the struggle between the leaders of the two irreconcilable political parties of that time was going on.
