The first poetic responses to the tragedy appeared as early as 1941. The first anthology of such responses was published in 1981 in Tel Aviv. The new anthology, coming out on the 80th anniversary of the tragedy, has included 133 poems by 95 authors in Russian or Ukrainian, including those translated from Yiddish . The title of the anthology is “The ravine of death – the ravine of memory. Poems about Babi Yar, compiled by Pavel Polyan and Dmitry Burago. The anthology is published in two books. The core of the first is the poems themselves, arranged chronologically, preceded by an introductory note and provided with an annotated alphabet of authors and translators. The second book, an appendix to the first, is a collection of essays by Pavel Polyan about Babi Yar. The anthology is illustrated with photographs and facsimiles of archival documents. Willingly or unwittingly, it serves as a kind of echo sounder - as if a seismograph of time, forever compressed in this tragic ravine.
This selection includes selected poems from the anthology.
