This monograph for the first time presents completely the policy for turning Bulgaria from an agrarian country into an industrial and urbanized one with all social consequences in the conditions of the Cold War in the second half of the 20th century. This was the time of the communist party's ruling when Bulgaria was a part from the Soviet camp in the War. These internal- and foreign factors defined the particularities for modernization. The work traces the connection between the stages of the Cold War and the different social-economic project of the leading party. Special attention is paid both to the Bulgarian-Soviet relations and to the attempts for economical relations of Bulgaria with the highly developed countries and with the related with that successes and problems of the modernization. It also deals with the controversial role of the authoritarian regime of Todor Zhivkov in the formation of urbanized and industrial society in Bulgaria. It reveals the ideas and personalities which stand in the basis of various concepts and attempts of reforming of the model of modernization. It makes the conclusion that the achieved average European level of development and the development of leading branches in the industry and the modernization could not be kept after the end of the Cold War because they are in their biggest part a product of the War.
