Serbia, primarily rich in minerals but also in many other goods, became a kind of focus for the people of Dubrovnik as the most skilled traders and exploiters of that era. Organized into colonies, the people of Dubrovnik founded their own fortifications and settlements, an entire judicial system and, as the most dominant sphere, trade chains, while leaving behind well-developed craft branches, which recorded the emergence of not only miners, but also goldsmiths, carpenters, tailors, shoemakers, waxers and furriers.
It is an interesting fact that the people of Dubrovnik were fully protected with a very high level of autonomy by charters issued by Serbian rulers, such as the charter of Stefan Nemanja from 1186, or Prince Lazar, which became the template for all future contractual documents with the people of Dubrovnik. This is an indicator of how well-developed the Serbian rulers were in their awareness of the importance of trade, which ensured the potential economic, political and cultural progress of the country.
