Sartre's impact on Czechoslovak culture in the second half of the 20th century was extraordinary. There was no one else like him, whose polyphonic voice would reach into so many areas and which would be addressed by scientists and ordinary citizens, readers and visitors to his plays. His influence did not stop at generalizing themes of human existence, but also touched on everyday events. His condemnation of the Russian invasion in 1968, which is published for the first time in the book, was fundamental. Together with Simone de Beauvoir, he visited Czechoslovakia four times. His visit in 1963 in particular can be described as fateful in the 20th century, comparable to the visit of Andre Breton and Paul Eluard in 1935. The book, which includes two hundred photographs and documents, among other things, appreciates for the first time the fact that Sartre had an immense influence on the reception of Franz Kafka, on local philosophers including Jan Patocka, but also on theatergoers.
