The study of the lexical structure of each language is not only interesting for professionals and the general public, but also important for society, as it indicates the ability of a language to create something new, reveals its potential and significance for the people. The author brings back from oblivion another part of our linguistic richness, describing the vocabulary of the Western Ukrainian version of the literary language of the interwar period, which developed at that time in Galicia and, in particular, in its center - the city of Lviv. This dialect was alive, full-fledged and multifunctional. The book highlights the social dialects that functioned in Lviv in the interwar period, including the jargon of schoolchildren and athletes. Particular attention is paid to balak, which became a linguistic feature of the Batyur subculture, which in the 20s and 30s of the twentieth century. gained its greatest prosperity. It also illustrates the specifics of Soviet language policy, which was aimed at limiting the use of Western Ukrainian vocabulary in order to artificially bring the Ukrainian language closer to Russian. It is shown how modern writers, trying to eliminate the consequences of the policy of Russification, actualize the Western Ukrainian vocabulary, which enriches the lexical structure of the national language.
