The monograph is focused on the study of the ethnic, political, social-economic, and cultural life of the Southern Ural Region starting from the ancient times up to the present days. The principal concern is with the origin and formation of the regional aboriginal population - the Bashkirs, their annexation to the Russian State and further development as a part of Russia (the XVIIth - XIXth cc.). Much emphasis is laid upon the Tsarist policy in the region, its dynamics and fight for freedom of the Bashkirs and other nations in the XVIIth - XIXth centuries.
