The Great Synagogue of Vilnius was a much valued and unique architectural monument of early XVIIth century Lithuania. It was destroyed during World War II and the post-war years and soon after shamefully neglected - it has not even been mentioned in the most extensive studies on Lithuanian Renaissance architecture written during the last few decades. The synagogue became the centre of the spiritual, cultural and social life of the Jewish community.
