The novelettes by the talented Russian writers Gennadii Gor, Leonid Rakhmanov, Mikhail Slonimskii were written in the end of the 1920s- the beginning of the 1930s. Refined imagination and the minutely described reality of the Soviet epoch are characteristic of their stories. It is significant that the three writers became during their late years the preceptors of the young "Leningrad school" of prose writers. Two of them - Andrei Bitov and Valerii Popov - supplemented the book with essays concerning their teachers.
