The author refutes the view that the Bulgars were a handful of people who followed their leader Asparuh from the Ural Mountains and settled in a small area at the Danube River delta. In fact, the author argues, the Bulgars inhabited Macedonia and Thrace before Asparuh's time. Far from being a small community, they were numerically one of the largest European peoples at the time.
