The Black Sea region has become the scene where the geopolitical interests of the in- out of region countries clash. After the breakup of the USSR and the socialist union, the region has acquired a new political and economic pattern and a new model of international cooperation and regional security appears. The book covers the role of international transport corridors, petroleum and gas mains, construction of which involved the Black Sea region countries. Their relations are worsen by ethnic conflicts as well as by international law issues, such as these of the Black Sea straits and of the delimitation of the Black Sea water area. The book contains a special unit about the situation on the Crimean Peninsula. Much attention is paid to the mechanisms of the regional cooperation and to new geopolitical projects, which will also be aimed to be an opposition to the Russian influence in the region. The book covers as well the evolution of the US policy in the region. The ecology of the Black Sea basin is also examined here.
