Jozef Lipski (1894–1958) is one of the most important figures in Polish diplomacy in the interwar period. He came from the elite of the Greater Poland landed gentry. He gained his first experience in the Polish National Committee of Roman Dmowski. He was accepted to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1919 and became an expert on German issues. He negotiated the Polish-German non-aggression pact of 1934. As ambassador in Berlin, he served the cause of the agreement – between the two quarreling states – created by Jozef Pilsudski and Adolf Hitler. He believed in the rightness and chances of a policy of equilibrium. After the defeat that September 1939 brought to Poland, he remained active until the end – in politics in exile. The biographical study devoted to Lipski is an outline of the diplomat's life.
