This is a famous medieval treatise by Cosmas the Priest against the Bulgarian Christian sect of the Bogomils, which, despite not being conclusively dated, is generally ascribed to the 10th century. The Bogomils grew very popular in Bulgaria and inspired other religious movements in Europe. But Cosmas considered them partly responsible for the ignorance and the heretical beliefs of the people. Nowadays, we should not accept the accusations of the Church against the Bogomils uncritically. The movement deserves to be studied in great depth, and it is up to each individual to judge its merits and demerits. In many ways, the Bogomils were well ahead of their time. Whether their teaching was a heresy or a return to early Christianity is a question which readers are invited to answer themselves.
