A new research conducted by Tatiana Shchepanskaya continues the theme of her previous book “Youth Subculture Symbolism” (1993). In this book the author makes an attempt to apply theories of ethnography and anthropology to modern society. Hippy subculture or so-called System described in this book is an ideal object for such studies for it contains all the components for classical ethnographical study: symbolic community arrangement, initiation rituals and transition ceremonies, many-sided mythology and broad folklore. Shchepanskaya does not trace history of the System but on the example ща hippy subculture tries to show that like in archaic societies symbolism and rituals play the function of social control in modern society as well. In the appendix there is a brief hippy slang dictionary.
