The book examines key issues for understanding the historical roots of the modern territorial dimension of Ukraine, namely: the ideas inherent in early modern Ukrainian society about its own space and their implementation in political concepts and practices. The complex of ideas of the traditional elite — princes and gentry — regarding the natural geographical boundaries of the Ukrainian world, the international background of its approaches, the transmission of spatial beliefs from the gentry to the Cossacks, which in the mid-17th century became the core of the new elite, and which was destined to summarize Ukrainian efforts of the early modern era in all spheres are clarified.
