This report examines current socioeconomic problems of Native peoples of the North living in the Magadan Region of northeastern Siberia (Evens, Koriaks, Kamchadals and others). Drawing on field and archival work collected in 1997, this work focuses on modern demographic trends, particularly migration and its effect on native ways of life. Appreciating the force of new sociopolitical conditions, the author investigates how new forms of economic organization have arisen from traditional reindeer herding and fishing pursuits.
