The author relies on historical sources and documents, recreates the exciting events of 1885: the preparation of the Unification, in which politicians and ordinary people from the southern Bulgarian towns and villages participated, and the subsequent war with Serbia. The peculiar form of a historical chronicle has allowed to interweave in the narrative events that took place in Constantinople and in the Principality of Bulgaria, through a direct description of Sultan Abdul Hamid, Prince Alexander Battenberg and their associates. Fascinatingly written, the book reveals little-known details of the dramatic events both in Southern Bulgaria and in the neighboring lands. And against the background of the fateful events, the fragile love of Lieutenant Naydenov and the teacher Evgenia develops, which seems to blossom even more beautifully in those stormy times.
