Ethnologist, historian of religion and poet Ivar Paulson (1922–1966) studied ethnography, ancient history and history at the University of Tartu and continued his studies in exile at the Universities of Hamburg and Stockholm, where he was also an associate professor and acting professor of religious history at the latter until the end of his life. His research topics have included religious history, human soul imagery and the soul world of nature; towards the end of his scientific career, the focus shifted to family guardian spirits-household gods, rituals related to agriculture, the concept of the supreme god and its mythology. In addition to over forty professional studies, mainly in German, he has published articles, essays and reviews of cultural history works, poems and translations of poetry in Estonian, especially in the magazine “Mana”. The publication of the book has been supported by the Ministry of Education and Research, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the Estonian Thought Foundation. Translated from German and English.
