The book focuses on the "topography of opportunity" during the Soviet era - not on laws or regulations, but more broadly on how the Soviet regime tried to keep citizens' aspirations and desires within permissible limits. The book connects broader political processes and the life experience of an individual, looks at various factors that influenced people's everyday life, behavior patterns, career opportunities, values. Among other things, various interweavings of colonialism, modernity and nationalism in the Soviet era are of interest. Broader historical processes and cultural trends are under consideration, as well as how power politics was perceived in everyday life.
