The first information about theatrical life in Slonim dates back to the XVIII century, when there was in 1744-1769 Slonim School Theater at the Jesuit College. The large theatrical troupe of the great Lithuanian hetman Michał Kazimir Oginski was founded in Slonim around 1771 and ceased its activities after 1791. During the German occupation in Slonim, a Belarusian drama group headed by I. Churkin was created and actively worked at the Belarusian People's House. The actors of the theater staged plays by Belarusian playwrights, performed various concert programs, invited Belarusian bands from other cities of Belarus. In 1968, the Slonim National Theater was headed by director Nikolai Varvashevich (1934-2001). This man gave all his strength, knowledge, inspiration and life to the theater in Slonim. The folk theater in the town above Shchara became an integral part of the cultural life of Slonim region. The theater's repertoire includes plays by classics of Belarusian and Russian drama: A. Ostrovsky, M. Gorky, B. Lavranyov, K. Tranyov, V. Rozov, Y. Kupala, V. Golubko, V. Dunin-Martsinkevich, K. Krapiva, A. Makayonka, etc. The staff of the Slonim National Theater in 1975-1977 became the winner of the First All-Union Festival of Amateur Art of Workers. The Slonim Drama Theater was established on the basis of the theater. On January 1, 1990, the State Drama Theater opened in Slonim, and Nikolai Varvashevich (1934-2001), Honored Cultural Worker of Belarus, became the director and director in one person. M. Varvashevich headed the theater until 2000. From 2000 to 2003. the main director of the theater was Victor Butakov, from 2003 to 2008. - Victor Nebalsin, and from 2008 to the present day - Vasily Syavets.
