Hryhorii Skovoroda (1722–1794) occupies a special place in the history of Ukraine, as he witnessed the Hetmanate's gradual loss of autonomy and its transformation into a province under the conditions of the expansion of the Russian Empire. Such processes left little chance for human development not only in the political, but also in the cultural sphere. Under such conditions, Skovoroda's intellectual mission was to create a philosophical project of personality formation, designed for those who are ready for independent existence. Skovoroda's idea of self-control grows out of the teaching of self-knowledge and related work.
