The book is dedicated to one of the most tragic, but at the same time, brightest pages in the history of the Hermitage - the branch of the museum in Sverdlovsk during the Great Patriotic War. Documents, memoirs of the branch staff, correspondence, photographs, drawings from the archives of the State Hermitage Museum tell how the museum exhibits were preserved in the Urals, how the branch staff lived and worked, how they met the Victory and how they prepared the return of the collections to Leningrad. The publication also includes documents on the Hermitage's donation to the Sverdlovsk Art Gallery in the postwar years. Objects of applied art made of bronze and stone, Western European and Russian paintings, sculpture and artistic furniture were transferred to Sverdlovsk as a gratitude from the Hermitage to the city, which preserved the treasures of the main museum of the country.
