This is a book of poems by Bulgarian poet and writer Asen Raztsvetnikov (1897-1951). First published in 1924, it was part of a series conceived by the publisher as a compassionate reaction to the dramatic and controversial events of September 1923 in Bulgaria. Left-wing political circles called the events "the September People's Uprising", while rightists described them as terrorist acts and isolated riots. To the general public, these were horrors which might escalate into a civil war. The notion of fratricide dominated descriptions by various writers. Raztsvetnikov was an important voice in this context. An outspoken critic of political repression, he aptly named one of his signature ballads "Cain".
