This book is the first publication devoted to Russian woodcut prints and engravings of the XVII-XVIIIth cc. The author offers a detailed analysis of the reasons for the appearance of this type of engraving, investigates the sources of the formation of its style and examines the subjects of the works. About fifty works are listed for the first time. The overwhelming majority of prints have not been published or reproduced anywhere else during this century.
