The book traces the history of preparing and publishing a series of documentary publications undertaken at the initiative of and financed by the Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich and dedicated to necropolises of pre-revolutionary Russia – “The Moscow cemetery” (in 3 volumes, 1907-1908), “The Petersburg cemetery" (in 4 volumes, 1912-1913), "The Russian provincial necropolis" (volume 1, 1914) and “The Russian cemetery in foreign countries” (Issue 1, 1915).
