Kazakh-Belarusian ties date back to the 1930s, with the establishment of the Writers' Unions of the republics and the 1936 plenum of the USSR Writers' Union held in Minsk, when poems by Abai, Dzhambul, and Ilyas Dzhansugurov were first published in Belarusian. Mutual translation efforts throughout these years have added new color to the publications and books of writers from both countries. All of this is reflected in a collection of documents, letters, translations, and articles, "Bound by War and Virgin Lands," part of a joint project between the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan, "Research Work by Kazakh Writers in the Archives of the CIS Countries." The Belarusian State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art, the State Museum of the History of Belarusian Literature, the Yakub Kolas State Literary and Memorial Museum, and the Writers' Union of Belarus actively participated in the project.
