The reference sections serve as the basis for preparing regional stratigraphic schemes of various systems of the Precambrian and the Paleozoic. Large-scale geological mapping for mineral exploration is based on them. This work presents reference sections of the Upper Paleozoic (the Carboniferous and the Permian) of the South Tien-Shan. The authors described continuous, tectonically undisturbed sections for three zones: high foothills of Turkestan-Alay, low foothills (within Shunk, Karatanga and Shuran river basins) and also for Karachatyr mountains.
