Interwar popular literature continues to inspire and provoke even after almost a hundred years: sometimes it attracts with its apparent naivety, sometimes with its thrilling plot. At the same time, our knowledge of this vast and opaque landscape remains very incomplete. The book Reading. Works and Contexts of Czech Popular Literature 1918-1939 offers the first comprehensive guide to its highs and lows, types and areas. In addition to eight expository chapters, focusing on selected characteristics (genres, themes, publishing platforms) and modes of reading (gender, ideology, transfer) of popular literature, it provides a clear calendar and, above all, twenty interpretive studies of specific texts, from which the diversity and originality of contemporary reading shines through. Like any good guide, our book does not and cannot exhaust its subject, but it does offer many tips on where to go when exploring this “golden age” of Czech popular literature.
