This novel by Bulgarian writer and diplomat Lea Cohen is about real-life persons, events, and machinations. Drawing on the recollections of a woman named Didi Baker, Cohen delves into the history of the Arie family, who were the biggest players on the Bulgarian perfume market until 1943. She tells a true crime story which she learned about from the archives. The novel is set against the backdrop of three traumatic episodes of Bulgarian history: the bombing attack at the Saint Nedelya Cathedral in Sofia in 1925, the banditry and kidnappings which were rampant in the country in the early 1930s, and the trials against "the Jewish profiteers" which the Bulgarian authorities carried out in 1942 and 1943 under pressure from Nazi Germany.
