Subjected to restrictions and persecution since September 9, 1944, Fani Popova-Mutafova spent a decade in the twilight of dual assessments and qualifications, and although this exile has ended, her life and work still await her researchers and interpreters.
With this book Blagovesta Kasabova pays a heavy debt to Bulgarian literary studies. Divergent political winds have crossed their native lands, but their fateful whims have erupted with particular force in the last century. Its first half marks the collapse of the Bulgarian national ideal - the unification of fragmented Bulgaria is not taking place; a Soviet-style dictatorship is established in the country. One of the first victims was Fani Popova-Mutafova, whom Kiril Hristov called "a dizzying peak in Bulgarian literature". With her famous saga about the Asenevtsi, she revived the great Vazov tradition and raised Bulgarian fiction to unexpected heights. For the first time with such force the historical novel is imposed in our verbal culture and becomes at the same time a measure of modernity and patriotism.
