One of the first victims was Fani Popova-Mutafova, whom Kiril Hristov called "a dizzying peak in Bulgarian literature". With her famous saga about the Asenevtsi, she revived the great Vazov tradition and raised Bulgarian fiction to unexpected heights. For the first time with such force the historical novel is imposed in our verbal culture and becomes at the same time a measure of modernity and patriotism.
