The publication of the book 'Selected Extracts from the Correspondence with Friends' written by N.V.Gogol in 1817 became a reason for the most important events in Russian literary and public life of the XIXth century. This work evoked an unprecedented public response and became a reason for violent polemics and numerous disputes. Nevertheless, it didn't attract much attention of researchers. The author of the offered work tries to fill up this gap and presents the analysis of public polemics in connection with the publication of 'Selected Extracts...' paying much attention to general analysis of the writing itself.
