The first president's son was kidnapped, another planted trees and culled spades with foreign visitors. During his political career, the longest-serving head of state had no problem breaking laws, mixing up the names of statesmen, names of organizations, geographical or historical facts, and flying where the wind blows. A former businessman at the head of the country spoke about the mafia state after the murder of a journalist. The first female president was a frequent target of populist leaders for her attitudes. The constellation of politicians holding the second highest constitutional post was incomparably more varied. The three decades of modern Slovak independence were often a journey that threatened the very foundations of democracy, and voters often chose between a great and an even greater evil. Nevertheless, there were several positive moments in the story of Slovakia.
