This book has two themes. The first is the phenomenon of autography: the various ways of establishing a relationship between an artistic text and the author — a textual, subjective recording of traces of human existence. The second theme is Jewish literature written in non-Jewish languages, and particularly Polish-Jewish literature of the second half of the 20th century. The distinctiveness of Polish-Jewish autographies stems from these divergent impulses. They balance on the border between private and public, individual and collective, disclosure and concealment, cipher and revelation. A text written for oneself becomes a text for others. The individual text merges with the multi-text of one's own work, and sometimes also that of others. Speaking about oneself is simultaneously speaking about others and on behalf of others. Against silence. Against loneliness. Against death. Against oblivion.
