Oskar Meltsas' book is an exceptionally direct glimpse into the origin of an Estonian village in Siberia. Through word-of-mouth stories, we find ourselves in the village of Zolotaja Niva, and we can read about the historical, sometimes anecdotal complications that awaited the emigrants in a faraway wasteland with a harsh climate. Beautiful descriptions of nature, traditions brought with them , bittersweet nostalgia and busy day-to-day editorials merge into a realistic whole, conveyed with a naive but highly visual mastery, in what is arguably one of the most humorous works about Siberian life, describing all aspects of being human. The memoirs are accompanied by accompanying words that talk about the fate of the main characters and also about Estonians in Siberian villages in general, and the book has a lot of photos.
