Stanislaw Lem (1921-2006) is one of the best-known Polish intellectuals of the XXth century in the world. He gained fame for his fiction in the field of fantasy and science fiction (Solaris), but this field was only an episode in his intellectual work. He was primarily interested in the influence of science and technology on man and his culture. He took up the challenges of the second half of the last century, which since the 1950s were faced with threats and hopes related to cybernetics, robotics and artificial intelligence.
