Vasil Makhno (born in 1964, Chortkov in the Ternopil region) is a poet, prose writer, essayist and translator. His works have been translated into many languages. Winner of several literary awards, including the Kovalivykh Foundation (2009), the International Poetry Prize "Poveje Morave" (Serbia, 2013), "The Air Force Book of the Year" (2015), the Ukrainian-Jewish Prize "Vstrecha" (2020). Since 2000 he has been living in New York.
In the epic novel "The Perpetual Calendar" by Vasil Makhno, events unfold over four centuries - from the 17th century to the present day. The center of the narrative is the small village of Mytnitsa, whose population, with periodic repetition, is experiencing wars, devastation, and decline. In the novel, local and global events coexist at the same time, different ethnic groups oppose and complement each other.
In such a large-scale work, the author uses various narrative strategies in order to assimilate the historical and personal experience of memory of place and space on a small piece of land between Mytnytsya, Chortkovo, Yazlivets and Buchach.
