When this book was first published ten years ago, it met with great interest from the Croatian reading public. That interest did not wane even after the entire edition was sold out, and repeated inquiries led to its new edition in a larger format and with richer content, precisely in the year of the 450th anniversary of the Peasants' Revolt. This should not be surprising since the topic of the book is one of the most famous events in Croatian history – the Peasants' Revolt of Matija Gubac. The political movements of the 20th century raised Matija Gubac to the historical pedestal on which he still stands today. The ideologies of these political movements made the figure of Matija Gubac, a peasant, rebel and fighter for the rights of the oppressed masses, a kind of icon who, with his charismatic power and destiny, easily attracted the sympathy of the Croatian people of the 20th century. Thus, the character of Matija Gubec, evoked from the romanticized past of Senoa's novel, grew into a kind of cult of the totalitarian regimes that ravaged 20th-century Croatia. Although it is undeniable that Matija Gubec and the Peasants' Revolt of 1573 owe their historical popularity to the political goals of the 20th century, this fact does not diminish the significance of this historical event.
