Pavel Ilyin (1936–2015) was born in Moscow. He received his Masters of Geography from Moscow State University. Pavel worked at the Institute of Urban Development; the Institute of Geography, Academy of Science, where he earned his PhD, and then at the Department of Geography, Soviet Encyclopedia Publishing House. Since 1967 he was also responsible for content creation and script development for the Geography Show for Children aired on the National Radio. In 1982 the family applied to immigrate, was denied permission to leave the USSR, and thus became “refuseniks”. The Ilyin family was allowed to leave the USSR in 1987, after the American Association of Geographers sent a letter to Soviet Government requesting permission to immigrate for geographer Pavel Ilyin and his family. Pavel began his career in the US as Fellow at Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies. He then worked for Washington Processing Center, and finally at the National Holocaust Memorial Museum. Pavel considered his job at the Museum as the most important in his life.
